The last full moon of the summer occurs this year on September 20. Pisces, the 12th and final zodiac sign, rules sleep and the subconscious, the dream world. Ruled by Neptune (Poseidon to the Greek), the Roman god of the sea and water, rides the waves of the ocean on his horse-drawn carriage much like King Triton from The Little Mermaid. We could probably learn a lot from that guy.
That’s how this life works these days it seems, constantly getting smashed in the face by a wave only to have to drag yourself back onto the shore. Get back up, and do it again. Round and round we go, where it stops? Nobody knows! Can someone please let me off this ride?
Feedback, Not Failure
We had our corresponding full moon in Pisces back on March 13, 2021. What was going on then? What seeds had I planted that are now ready to be harvested? I looked back through my journals (the actual ones, not the ones on here) to see for myself. I pulled Raido reversed, which means that it was upside down when I laid it on the table. Raido is a journey, the rune of union and reunion.
What you regard as detours , inconveniences, disruptions, obstacles, and even failures and deaths will be rerouting opportunities.
Ralph Blum, The Book of Runes
I pulled another reversal, the Queen of Wands. For some reason unbeknownst to me, I seem to pull both the rune and the tarot card in reversed positions at the same time pretty regularly. I am not sure what that means exactly, simply noticing a pattern. Anyway!
Wands represent the fire element. Fire can be destructive, as we all know all too well from that propane explosion a few years back. That destroyed a myriad of things for me. Life as I knew it was over, some good and some not so good. Fire can also warm a home, heat a meal, and nurture camaraderie along with some pretty tasty marshmallow treats. “You’re killing me, Smalls.” God I love The Sandlot, such a classic.
This particular Queen is calling on the enthusiastic drive and power that comes with that wild flame. In its reversal position, she reflects that energy inward to the Self. People have so many varying definitions of success that sometimes we get so caught up in the ‘shoulds’ of what we are doing without really sitting down to think if that is even the thing that YOU want. Success to me isn’t a bajillion dollars. It isn’t a fancy house, or fancy car. I could live in an RV down by the river for all I care. I actually have a pretty good spot already picked out.
Out With The Old
The Empress is our Virgo goddess that holds the energy of intuition and nature, connecting us back to the senses. We sometimes try to bypass our emotions because we are either stubborn asses or we don’t really want to deal with what is bubbling beneath the surface. I am telling you now from personal experience that ignoring them is a recipe for disaster.
Have you ever shaken up a canned soda? Of course you have. It’s fucking fun. What happens? You shake and shake, crack the lid, and a volcano of sweet corn syrup erupts all over the place. That’s kind of what we do with our emotions, we get each other all riled up until we spew them all over each other, not realizing the sticky mess we are going to have to clean up later. It’s not pretty, nor is it effective.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy teaches that you have to go through the emotions to get to the other side. Not around them, over them, or under them, but through them. There was so much ugly crying in therapy, and more in the car, and then some more at home. There was journaling, writing letters that I would never send, and burning rituals. There was praying to some body out there to find some guidance, only to realize that it was inside of me the whole time. This is the part most people hide from the world. We see them on the other side of it, and then we think that it isn’t hard. It’s fucking hard. Believe.
In With The New
The Empress is number three in the major arcana of the tarot. Threes represent connection and unity, much like the rune Raido. It’s about putting things together that didn’t quite fit before, or maybe you just didn’t understand how the puzzle pieces connected. This is wonderful news! The birth of a new idea could be exactly what we need at this time in order nurture more joy into our lives.
The autumnal equinox is on September 22 this year, which officially starts spooky season, although I am already getting started on that fun. I am a Libra sun baby after all, which marks the beginning of my zodiacal calendar. (Your sun sign is your month one of this 12-year cycle.) I actually prefer this as opposed to the traditional Roman new year. Somehow making drastic change in the dead middle of winter just sounds like setting yourself up for inevitable failure.
It’s fucking cold. We are supposed to be hibernating and resting up for the spring defrost, where we begin our planting yet again. Not starting some nonsense diet or whatever new workout is being hyped up on Instagram. This is where we plan for the next event, where we fill up our tanks with reserves for later use. If you needed any sort of permission to sit on your ass and do nothing, this is it.
One of Libra’s greatest strengths is being able to take great care of yourself. Sometimes this looks like getting support, whether that be professional help or simply talking it out with a friend. And other times that looks like making space for our feelings. I actually had to learn how to make space for that with a therapist, because I was so completely ignorant about everything related to emotions. Even if you aren’t yourself a Libra sun, you can still absolutely use the energy of the season to your advantage.
Mad love, Jenna
