In the Upside Down

We start out our lives following one path and then at some point along the way we come to realize that it’s no longer working, or maybe it just doesn’t make us happy in the same way that it used to. Much like The Hanged One in the tarot teaches us, sometimes we need a little change of perspective.

It wasn’t until I was halfway up this metal pole and attempting my first inversion when I realized that I was terrified to be upside down. I guess I had never been put into a situation where my knee pit was the only thing keeping me from diving headfirst into the floor. It is still taking me some time to get comfortable in the upside down. I mostly just tried to stay low to the ground considering I did fall on my head once during that first class.

In the second class we learned how to do an outside leg hang, AKA the Gemini. My goal of this video was to record myself doing this move on each side so that I can use it for reference purposes later. It will also give me an idea of how well I am progressing and improving as I keep practicing. You can see on that second leg that I almost bottomed out at the end. I did manage to catch myself this time.

During the third class we concentrated on hip holds, which honestly feels like your skin is being ripped off. Pole burn! This is the foundation for learning the inside leg hang, AKA the Scorpio. And I have to say that I fucking love the fact that many of the moves that I have learned so far are named after the Zodiac. It’s so perfect for me.

In this last class we learned how to transition from the Gemini to the Scorpio. I would not have been able to do this without the help of one of my classmates. She supported me literally with her hand under me, coaching me through the move and encouraging me the entire class until I felt comfortable to do it on my own. As someone who has been searching for years for a community of acceptance and belonging, I feel as though I am finally finding it in this space. And that is a lovely change of pace.
